This week went much better than last week for me. I was very busy with my two classes and felt more comfortable and confident when teaching both my classes. I thought of a great activity for the students to do in accounting with petty cash reports. I think the students liked the activity because they were able to have a change and do something other than book work the entire class period. I think this overall week went very week for me. I am still having some problems with some of the students. I don't know if they are used to the way my coop has done things the entire year and it is just a change for them. On Friday we had an in-service day. We did not have any professional development, we just worked in the room the entire day. I was able to get a lot of my planning done so that was great.
If I were to go back to the beginning of the week I have planned some of my lessons differently so that the students had some time to do more exercises to practice the problems.

I can identify with a couple of the points you made. First, my students definitely enjoy it when there is a change of pace and they get to do something other than the usual. This is a challenge for me. When there is so much material to work through, it seems easy to just keep pushing through it, and that's where students tend to drift off and get lost or bored. This may be the biggest challenge for me; making dry material interesting, and finding new ways to change the pace of each class (especially with such long classes). Secondly, I know what you mean with students being used to the co-op's style teaching, and having to get used to a new style. My feeling on that is, as long as you show the students that you are human and continue to show interest in them, they will eventually show interest in you and be more into the material. The challenge for me is, being patient with the students who are slower to jump on board.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you're doing great! Just keep after it :)
I agree with your point that the students enjoy the change. For review this week, we played Jeopary and the students seemed to enjoy it so much. My coop even had to remind the class to settle down. I got so wrapped up watching the students enjoy the game that I let them get rowdy a few time. We got it under control eventually.
ReplyDeleteI think when the students start seeing you care, they respond more positively. Two weeks ago, I have a student that gave me some problems but after finding out how I could help him, things turned around. I gave the student some one-on-one time and at every lesson I made sure to ask if he was getting the material. This seemed to help a lot. Even my coop noticed the difference.
Keep up the good work! I know you will find a way to work with the students you are having problems with.
Planning and preparation really help student teachers create great classes for their students. Students seem to watch student teachers with very close eyes. When we impress them, we gain not only their attention, but also their respect!
